Despite an increase in competitive pressure from fuels like natural gas, coal is still the principle fuel used to generate electricity in the United States. In fact, almost fifty percent of the electricity consumed in the U.S. is coal-generated. As an industry, Coal is comprised of thousands of diverse companies that include coal exploration & extraction, transportation, power generation, coke production, large industrial consumers, major export hubs and more. It's a vast industry with implications on the world economy.

Platts newly updated U.S. Coal Activity 2012 wall map displays in detail the key components of this dynamic industry. Follow coal from the source-region to the coal-fueled power plant. Gain an understanding of the various transportation methods used to transport coal. View proposed plant locations in relation to existing coal source regions, power plants, and major coal export locations. Assess the state of clean coal by identifying plants with SO2 scrubber technology.

More than a geographic representation of the coal industry, the US Coal Activity Map is an information resource which includes tabular data, charts, graphs and illustrative thematic maps.

Map Content

  • More than 700 coal-fired power plants sized by average coal consumption, colored by primary coal source and shaped by SO2 scrubber status. Plants are labeled with an operating company code, plant name, and coal transportation mode when available.
  • Over 700 active coal mines uniquely symbolized by mine type - surface vs. underground - sized by average coal production (000 tons)
  • IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) plants labeled with plant name.
  • Coal-hauling railroads uniquely symbolized by ownership
  • Coal-producing regions colored by primary coal-type
  • Coalbed methane fields.
  • Planned/under construction coal-fueled plants labeled with operator code and plant name.
  • Carbon capture & sequestration locations
  • Existing/Proposed U.S. Coal import and export terminals
  • Coal docks uniquely symbolized and identified by name
  • Navigable rivers uniquely symbolized and labeled by name
